The 2015 ESCP Right Colectomy Audit

The 2015 ESCP right colectomy and ileocaecal resection audit collected prospective data on 3,208 patients across 284 centres in 39 countries. The overall anastomotic leak rate was 8.1%.

Patients who developed an anastomotic leak had:

  • a higher mortality than those who did not (9.8% versus 1.8%).
  • a longer median hospital stay (18 versus 7 days)
  • a higher 30-day re-operation and 30-day re-admission rate.

This audit demonstrated the high rate of anastomotic leak worldwide and the severe consequences of leak to patients and health services.
